What they needed

Geoff Lewis wrote Building the Iron, a memoir of chasing the diggers round bombed-out Swansea and five years as an apprentice at Ruston Bucyrus in Lincoln. His website hadn’t kept up with the book. It was a fixed desktop page from a drag-and-drop builder: a row of eleven blue links for a menu, outlined lettering over the photos and long justified paragraphs, and no phone layout at all, so on a phone everything shrank to a third of its size. He needed a modern site that sold the book on the first screen and did his stories justice.

What I built

  • The book, its price and a Buy button on the first screen, with three magazine reviews right under it
  • Nine of Geoff’s stories in his own words, grouped into Swansea and Lincoln
  • An “Inside the works” gallery of Ruston Bucyrus photographs, captioned in Geoff’s own lines
  • Ordering by PayPal or card, with copies and postage totalled before you pay
  • Built for phones first, with Buy the book and Ask Geoff always to hand

Before and after

Built for a desktop. Rebuilt for the phone in your pocket.

Three reviews right under the book

  • A Buy Now button at the foot of the page

diggerynook.com

Made in a drag-and-drop website builder at a fixed 1,000 pixels wide, with no layout for phones: a phone shrank the whole page to fit.
