Websites for Welsh schools, written in Welsh

I’m Rhys, a web designer in Caerphilly, and Welsh is my first language. I build school websites that are Welsh first and properly bilingual, written by someone who speaks it, not run through a translator.

Your staff can post news, letters home and term dates themselves, and parents get a site that works properly on their phone.

Welsh first, done properly

Mutations, idioms and the tone your school uses, written by a first-language speaker. An English version can sit alongside for parents who don’t speak Welsh, with a switch on every page.

Easy for staff to update

News, letters home, term dates, the calendar and policies, all added from a simple editor. A training session for staff is included, and I’m only a message away after.

Accessible, quick and careful with data

Built to WCAG 2.2 AA with an accessibility statement, fast on any phone, and no tracking cookies: visitor numbers are counted without them. Photos of pupils only go up with your say-so.

What a school site includes

  • Welsh and English versions, with a CY/EN switch on every page
  • News and letters home, posted by your staff
  • Term dates and a calendar of events
  • A policies and documents library, tidy and easy to search
  • Pages for each class or year, your staff and your governors
  • Admissions, the prospectus and how to contact the school
  • An accessibility statement and a privacy notice
  • Hosting, security, daily backups and updates
  • Your content moved across from your current site
  • Training for staff, and help whenever you need it

How it works

  1. 1A chat with you or your business manager about what the site needs to do.
  2. 2I design your new homepage, free, so you can see it before deciding anything.
  3. 3You get a fixed, written quote to take to your governors.
  4. 4I build it, move your content across and train your staff.
  5. 5It goes live, and I look after it: hosting, security, updates and changes.

Clear prices for school budgets

Every school gets a fixed, written quote before any work starts, with no hourly billing. You can pay half to start and half at launch, or spread it over 12 months at no extra cost.

The site is built in one language to start with. An English version for parents (or a Welsh one, the other way round) is £300 extra, written by me too.

Keeping it online is a monthly care plan, from £25 a month, so the running cost is clear from day one.

Not a school?

The same goes for Cylchoedd Meithrin, PTAs, Mentrau Iaith, chapels, choirs and Welsh-language societies.

Questions

Can the site be in Welsh only?
Yes. The Welsh site is the starting point, and an English version is £300 extra, written by me rather than machine-translated. Most Welsh-medium schools add it, as many parents don’t speak Welsh at home.
Can you move everything from our current site?
Yes. I’ll bring across your news, letters, policies and photos, and set up redirects so old links keep working.
Who owns the website?
The school does: the web address, the design and everything on it. If you ever move on, I’ll hand over a full copy.
Do staff need to be technical?
No. If you can write an email, you can post news or upload a letter. I’ll run a training session, and you can message me any time.
Is it accessible?
Yes. It’s built to WCAG 2.2 AA, the standard public bodies are asked to meet, and comes with an accessibility statement. I test it with a keyboard and a screen reader before it goes live.
What does it cost to keep running?
Care plans start at £25 a month for hosting, security, backups and updates. Plans with changes done for you start at £39 a month.
